Interesting Behavior

AUSTRALIA - July 15, 2008: A koala that cheated death after being hit by a car at about 60 mph and dragged with his head jammed through the vehicle grill for about 7 miles is being dubbed Australia's luckiest marsupial. The eight-year-old male koala, named "Ely 'Lucky' Grills" by rescuers, was struck by an unwitting motorist and found only when the car stopped after being flagged down by another vehicle.

"Lucky" hung on during his ordeal with one arm and his trapped head, and was freed with household scissors used like a fireman's "jaws-of-life" to cut around the car's mesh grill. He quickly recovered and was nearly better after a couple of hours rest and feeding. He is to stay at an animal hospital set up by the late television wildlife and crocodile crusader Steve Irwin, for 45 days to recover from his experience.

Zoo News

UNITED STATES - July 17, 2008: One of a U.S. zoo’s three remaining original animals has died. Montgomery the hippo had been at the zoo since it opened in 1974. He was euthanized Tuesday because of several ongoing ailments that were not responding to treatments.

Montgomery was a favorite with visitors who marveled at his size, which was large even for a hippo. Monty was ten feet long and five feet high, and the zoo could only estimate his weight at about 4,200 pounds.

Weekly Litter Box

CANADA - July 17, 2008: Four malnourished, panting puppies, who were living amongst their own waste, were discovered in a van with the windows up on a sweltering hot day. There was no food or water for them anywhere and there was some feces and urine on a piece of cardboard taking up the back of the van.

An off duty security guard made the discovery after parking next to the van in a mall parking lot. A sign in the van's window read "Puppies 4 sale." When he approached the van and looked inside he saw the dogs. Luckily, the door was open and he was able to roll down all the windows to let the air in. He then called the police who arrested the owner on charges of animal cruelty.

The puppies were taken to the humane society and are doing well.

Interesting Bit

UNITED STATES - July 17, 2008: Rocco, a beagle who strayed from a New York City yard five years ago, has been found 850 miles away in Georgia and reunited with his owners. The supervisor at the county animal control in Hinseville, Georgia, said that someone dropped off the pooch on July 5.

A microchip embedded under Rocco’s skin helped trace him to his family in Queens, NY.
