Interesting Behavior
UNITED STATES - June 25, 2009: Two wayward cows decided to abandon their Massachusetts farm and walk at least five miles into New Hampshire, generating 911 calls from drivers. A Deputy Fire Chief and his partner spent 45 minutes with ropes in hand trying to chase down the cows.
One of the adolescent heifers was finally captured, found up to her neck in mud. The farmer's daughter and son-in-law are still searching for the second cow
Zoo News
UNITED STATES - June 25, 2009: Dari the elephant turns 49 today, and the zoo where she lives is planning a celebration in her honor. She is already the oldest African elephant in a North American zoo, and the zoo will honor her with a birthday card and an elephant-sized birthday cake, made of some of her favorite foods like peanut butter, popcorn and hay.
Zoo keepers said Dari knew it was her special day last year, trumpeting and relishing the attention. The focus will be back on Dari again next year, when the zoo plans an even larger celebration for her 50th birthday.

UNITED STATES - June 23, 2009: A second suspect has been arrested in connection with the dragging of a dog. It happened last October when the dog was tied to the bumper of an SUV and dragged for nearly a mile. After several months of investigating the woman accused of tying the dog to the bumper has now been charged with animal cruelty.
At the time of the incident, witnesses identified a 20-year-old man as the driver of the SUV. He was arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty. This week deputies arrested an 18-year-old woman after proving her original alibi was a lie. She's now charged with felony animal cruelty plus two counts of obstructing an officer.
The dog, Sammy, not only survived the violence but he is thriving with his new family.
Interesting Bit
INDIA - June 24, 2009: Two frogs have been "married" in a ceremony in western India to usher in the delayed monsoon rains. Residents looked on as the groom, Raja, and bride, Rani, were joined in union in a solemn ritual.
Tradition dictates that if frogs are married off with full Vedic or Hindu rituals, the rain god is pleased and the heavens will open within days. Similar ceremonies have been held across the country. |
