Before You Bake

While Chance's Spot tries to provide recipes that are healthy for your pet, we advise that you use care when preparing any of our recipes. There are a number of common foods that you should never give to your pet, such as onions, grapes, chocolate, and chicken bones. However, if you have any concerns about any of our Pet Treats Recipes, please consult your veterinarian or visit the ASPCA.

Fish Lovers Treat

2 cans tuna packed in oil
2/3 cup cooked rice
1/4 cup chopped parsley
Heart-shaped cookie cutter

Combine ingredients. Refrigerate for 2 hours. Place cookie cutter on serving plate. Spoon fish mixture into cookie cutter and pack using your fingers or the back of the spoon. Return to refrigerator for 30 minutes. When firm, you can remove the cookie cutter and garnish with dry treats.

Valentine Pup Cakes

1 large apple
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/4 cup oatmeal
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1/2 cup water
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons honey2 eggs
1 cup grated cheddar cheese

For the Frosting:

1 8 oz package Neufchatel Cheese (low fat cream cheese)
2 tablespoons plain yogurt
2 tablespoons honey

Preheat oven to 400F (200C) and grease muffin tins. Next, core, slice and mince the apple and set aside. In a large bowl, mix together flour, oatmeal, baking powder, and baking soda. In a medium bowl, blend together the yogurt, water, oil, honey, and eggs, then stir in the apple and cheese. Add to the flour mixture and stir until mixed.

Spoon into the muffin tins, filling each cup about three-quarters full. Bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center of a muffin comes out clean. Let rest in the muffin tins for a few minutes, then remove and set aside to cool.

For the frosting, combine the Neufchatel cheese (at room temperature), honey, and yogurt until smooth. Spread on pup cakes. Makes 16-18 pup cakes.
